Gaffer's Chat With Harry Hudson - 09/08/2018
Whyteleafe FC fan and local motoring journalist, Steve Hole, talks to manager Harry Hudson. This week, Harry tells us his thoughts about the win over Molesey and looks forward to the Guernsey game. Each week Harry will bring us his thoughts and important team news, the ins, the outs, and the highs and lows.
Any new players to report this week, Harry? None to report, unfortunately!
Any departures? No again!
What’s the current injury situation? It was really pleasing to see Lauris Chin and Ricardo Thompson back running yesterday at training but Saturday will unfortunately be a week too soon for them. Ashley-Paul Robinson is also a doubt for Saturday with an ankle issue.
Have you settled on a formation for the early league games? Yes, we’ll keep the same structure we implemented for pre-season. I am happy to outline this to fans at our 'meet the manager' session but would rather not outline our structure for opposing teams to plan for, Steve! Suffice to say, we hope to surprise a few people this year!
Harry, another win (4-3 Molesey) in our final pre-season game last Saturday. How did you see that one? Five wins from eight games is pretty good. I thought it was quite a poor game against Molesey, to be honest and a disappointing performance from our team. We scored very early and immediately took our foot off the gas amid difficult conditions. In the second half we played with a better intensity and scored some goal goals but the manner in which we conceded two goals was awful – the fans will be pleased to hear that our focus this week has been on our defensive structure!
Gus Lukini bagged another goal? How many is that during pre-season? You are testing me now! I think it is his third goal but he will know better than me! I was pleased that Eddie Dusane scored another two and that takes his tally up to six for pre-season as well, which is an impressive total - hopefully he’ll carry that form into the season!
Looking forward to our first league game this Saturday (August 11, Church Road against Guernsey 2pm NOTE EARLIER KICK-OFF TIME FOR THIS ONE) what are your thoughts on our opponents? We cannot wait for the season to start to be honest, pre-season has seemed like quite a long time this year.

Guernsey are quite unknown to us as they have only played one pre-season game so far against Worthing. That being said losing narrowly to two late goals against a Bostik Premier League side shows that they will be a tough opponent. I know our players are chomping at the bit to start and I am confident if we find our level on Saturday we will be a tough proposition for anyone in this league.
What is your history like against them?I have personally never played against them - I have been doing my homework on their typical style/players etc but the game will be a new experience for me.
What are you and Calum’s early season aspirations? We are really focussing on getting off to a good start. Momentum is key at any level of football and getting off to a good start is imperative to us. If we can perform to our level, which we reached against Merstham and Corinthian Casuals, I think we can look forward to a successful season. Despite our financial restrictions, we have a squad capable of beating anyone on our day - if we can find consistency there is no reason that we cannot be looking at chasing down the play off places.
