Leatherhead barely had to raise a sweat to take the points from Whyteleafe who look to be floundering in their attempts to guarantee their future Ryman League status.
Once again they failed to trouble to the opponents' goalkeeper and once again they failed to finish the match with 11 players. Due to suspensions, there will be numerous key players missing from the important final matches of the season and manager Stuart Massey will be ruing his failure to deal with his players' indiscipline.
The miserable weather did nothing to lift the spirits of the long-suffering 'Leafe supporters and the only had to wait ten minutes for their side to concede. Leatherhead's Tommy Hutchings chased down the ball wide of O'Hara's goal. With no defenders around, O'Hara left his goal-line to deal with the threat but Hutchings managed to cross past the giant keeper, to Jason Turley who outjumped his marker and nodded in from close range.
Whyteleafe had a few meagre attacks. Sean Rivers headed wide from a Mark Hammond cross on 30 minutes and, meeting an Asher Hudson cross, Hammond himself headed towards goal two minutes later but it was easy for Leatherhead keeper Chris Lewington to gather.
'Leafe's best effort of the half came on 43 minutes when Sean Rivers fired just wide when he'd found himself in space on the edge of the box.
Rivers had the best chance of anyone early in the second half, but again fired wide on 55 minutes. But any chance of a recovery for Whyteleafe soon slipped away just four minutes later. A rare slip up in defence from Asher Hudson let in an unmarked Turley. The visiting striker ran in on goal and was clumsily brought down by O'Hara. In accordance with the strict application of the laws of the game, the giant keeper was dismissed. Centre back, Adam Broomhead, surely a contender for Player of the Year, took the keepers' gloves and first job was to face the penalty.
Hutchings stepped up to take the spot-kick but Broomhead dropped quickly to block the effort and the ball was cleared to safety. The unlikely save prompted an all-too-rare cheer from the Whyteleafe supporters.
To be fair, Whyteleafe played quite well with ten men especially as the dynamic Callum Maclean had replaced a rather lethargic and ineffective Andrew Martin. Maclean was full of running an caused some upset to the generally untroubled Leatherhead defence.
However, Leatherhead were able to double their lead and effectively finish off Whyteleafe on 72 minutes when Kev Terry fired home a crisp volley from the edge of the box. Rob O'Hara may have save the well struck shot but it was too much for Broomhead.
More positively from Whyteleafe's point of view, the closing stages saw the introduction of Ricardo Williams. The tall but pacey striker had impressed in pre-season and in the opening matches of this season but suffered an injury and then a long suspension picked up while playing the reserves saw him lose his way. His introduction in place of Mark Hammond added some much needed impetus late in the game but in the end Leatherhead left as comfortable winners.
Whyteleafe: O'Hara, Hudson, Harney (Gray), Reeve, Broomhead, Goodchild, Conroy, Smith, Martin (Maclean), Rivers, Hammond (Williams).
