GODALMING 2 - 0 WHYTELEAFE
Tuesday 16th December 2008
Ryman League Division 1 South

Whyteleafe came away from Godalming with nothing at a ground where they have yet to get a league point.

There was little to choose between the sides in the early exchanges but it was the home side who took the lead with the first chance of the match. A long hopeful ball bounced in the area and over the defence, and with Matt Mann rooted to his line, Andy Ottley nipped in to head home from close range.

'Leafe put a bit of pressure on the home goal, forcing three quick corners, then Denva McKenzie made a good run towards the box, beating two defenders before being brought down. Andy Martin took the resultant free kick but hit it straight into the arms of Rodney Chiweshe.

In the 34th minute, Andrew Martin found McKenzie in the box. He chipped the ball over Chiweshe but was judged to have fouled the keeper. Martin then headed a Steve McNamara cross at Chiweshe, then in the 38th minute McNamara had a go himself after a strong run, but his shot went wide. Two minutes before the break, Paul Scott got past the defence and shot past Chiweshe, but couldn't get enough power onto his shot, allowing Shaun Elliott time to get back and clear off the line.

The visitora pressed forward a little more in the second half. Alhajjie Jabbie was brought down after a great run in the 56th minute. McNamara struck the free kick well but it was comfortably saved by Chiweshe. The turning point in the game came in the 61st minute when Martin looked certain to score with his header from a Michael Harney free kick, but Chiweshe pulled off a brilliant save at full length to tip the ball round the post.

Callum McLean went down in the box in the 63rd minute but his penalty claims were waved away.

Stuart Massey made a number of changes leaving a very attacking formation as they gambled on getting an equaliser, but they inevitably left space at the back, and the hosts exploited this to put the result beyond doubt in the 88th minute. Brahim Eloumsani had missed a sitter in the 84th minute, but he put through Buzov to score the second and clinch the points for Godalming.

Whyteleafe: Mann, Patterson-Bohner, Harney (Hammond 77), Broomhead, Hudson, Scott, McNamara (McLean 58), Smith, Martin, McKenzie (Murray-Price 58), Jabbie.
