Whyteleafe again met opposition from the top end of the table and ended up defeated. There can be little argument that the visitors were worthy winners. They played some fine passing football and were on top for long periods of the game and would appear to be good play off candidates.
The last thing 'Leafe needed was to concede an early goal, particularly as they have struggled to find the net, but this was what happened before two minutes were on the clock. Nathan Smart won a free kick on the edge of the box when he was brought down. Darren Wheeler's well struck free kick came back off the foot of the post, the rebound falling into the path of Jamie McClure who slotted the ball past the diving Robert O'Hara into the net.
In the 15th minute, chaos reigned in the 'Leafe defence when Alhajie Jabbie sliced a clearance across the face of goal. Ali Reeve was deceived by the spinning ball and failed to get a header in to clear, the ball falling to Wheeler, but 'Leafe were let off when he fired wide from close range.
The home side's best move of the half came in the 28th minute. A fine run down the right by Asher Hudson took him close to the by-line. He played it back to Andy Martin, whose cross found Richard Dimmock in the box. He laid the ball back to Robbie Smith, but he fired his shot well over the bar.
Two minutes later Smart should have put Fleet two up but shot wide from close range after Paul Harkness put him through. In the 43rd minute O'Hara tipped over a header from McClure from a corner. The resultant corner saw Steve Hemmings allowed a free header in the box but it went over the bar.
'Leafe had their only shot at goal in the 50th minute when Hudson tried his luck from 30 yards, his shot being caught by Paul Smith who was otherwise not involved in the game all afternoon. Martin put a good cross over in the 57th minute but Ryan Gray just failed to get a head to it.
The game ended as a contest in the 63rd minute when despite having two defenders to one forward at the far post, Smart was allowed a free header at the far post which beat the diving O'Hara to double the visitors' lead.
Manager Stuart Massey made a triple substitution to try and change things, but his side threatened little, with just two half chances, one seeing Smith shoot wide from a Gray cross, and the other seeing a Mark Hammond free kick headed clear under pressure by Mark Patterson.
Whyteleafe: O'Hara, Hudson, Jabbie (Hammond 67), Reeve, Broomhead, Conroy (Sikaude 67), Gray, Smith, Martin, Dimmock (MacLean 67), Goodchild.
